Don't Auto Play Your Videos

When you design your blog, one of your biggest concerns should be usability.  You want to make your blog easy to navigate, easy to read and worth coming back to.  Every little detail should be considered, including whether or not to auto play the videos you embed on your site.  While many Internet marketers will argue that auto play will get viewers to stop and pay attention, they don’t take into consideration the people who are viewing the site at work or next to a sleeping baby.

To me, auto playing videos is one of the most obnoxious tactics a blogger can use.  The noise of an unexpected video is startling, to say the least, and could lead to someone getting in trouble if they are at work when it begins playing.  I don’t care how interested I am in the subject of a blog, if a video begins auto playing when I go to a page, I will exit the site and find my information elsewhere.

The same goes for music or any other noise.  You have no way of knowing what a person is doing or where they are at when they read your blog.  Can you imagine how irritating it would be to visit a website that automatically begins playing loud music and wakes the baby you just spent 30 minutes putting to sleep?

While the noise of a video may grab some people’s attention, it is more likely to get the wrong attention and turn off potential readers and customers.  So when you embed your video or music, do your readers a favor and allow them to choose whether or not it plays.
