Blogging is one area of writing on the web that you are supposed to let your personality shine through. If you are transitioning from the stuffier world of third person writing and formal content, you may have trouble letting loose and being yourself on your blog, but that is the very thing that attracts blog readers. They don’t subscribe to read boring, third person accounts – they want the real person behind the writing.
Whether you are a seasoned blogger or just getting started, take some time to consider what makes your favorite blogs work for you. Take a look at the top blogs in your topic and see what makes them stand out. Chances are, they have found a real way to connect with their readers; one that makes it clear they are a real person with their own unique insights into the topic. When writing in your blog, it is okay to use the word “I” in your posts. Make every attempt to reach out and engage your readers with your topics. If you are writing about a product, talk about how it has affected you personally. They don’t want to hear, “Widget X is designed to reduce frustration and provide an easier user experience” when they can hear, “I tried this Widget X, and you won’t believe how much easier it has made my life”.
Try to think of how you would talk to a friend over a cup of coffee at the coffee shop. Be casual, relaxed and friendly while still getting your point across. Readers to your blog will appreciate the human element while gaining the information they need. At the same time, don’t make your blog revolve around you. People don’t have enough time – or interest - to read about your kid using the toilet for the first time when they want to know how to do or get something.
