If you’ve got a good grasp of grammar but could still use some skills to brush up every now and then, Grammar Girl may be just what you’re looking for. Described as a “Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing,” this site, run by Mignon Fogarty, offers free daily tips to improve your grammar.
Mignon’s advice is short and sweet, never boring, and covers word choice, grammar rules, style, punctuation, and even business tips. She also offers helpful tips and tricks to remember them all. Though very simple and straightforward, her advice is both memorable and entertaining.
One fun aspect of Mignon’s tips is her explanation about cultural uses. For example, she might conduct a survey on how many people say a phrase or word one way and how many use it a different way. Then, after she has the results, she provides her own analysis through research as to why they speak this way—as well as some of the reasons the people surveyed gave behind their responses. Regional variations, cultural phrases and even different generational takes on one saying or another can be quite fascinating to learn about.
The site is fairy interactive, with plenty of social networks, podcasts, link opportunities, and a newsletter for users that includes surveys, user responses, questions and more. Grammar Girl has also won several awards, including Podcast Peer Awards, and has been hailed as an exemplary site for use by Oprah Winfrey, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, CNN, USA Today and Martha Stewart.
This month Mignon is offering a grammar challenge for some fun. Since September 24 is National Punctuation Day, she is asking everyone to send in an ode to their favorite punctuation mark or about punctuation in general to punctuation@quickanddirtytips.com. Be sure to paste your ode into your email; attachments aren’t accepted.
By the way, “ode,” Mignon notes, is used loosely; any poem, short essay, or other written tribute to punctuation will do. She will feature the best 100 to 200 word entries in her newsletter, and 600 to 700 word entries in her podcast. Winners will be featured the week of September 24, so be sure to get your entries in soon!
Mignon also has a helpful book available for purchase, Grammar Girl’s Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing. And if you’re really into Grammar Girl, you can visit her shop where you can buy holiday cards, t-shirts, mugs, a mouse pad, journals and a messenger bag.
